Animal Care

????

“I don’t like how this horse looks. I don’t think her immune system is healthy.”

I told her that I had been thinking about doing a hair sample analysis on Lady that my horse nutritional company offered. “What do you think of having that done?”

“Well, I don’t know anything about that, but it certainly couldn’t hurt.”
I cut Lady’s hair that day and sent it in. Lady’s report came back with an appointment set to talk with the nutritionist. He informed me that Lady’s biggest problem was aluminum toxicity and she also had nutritional imbalances.

“We can do a special formula to give her the vitamins and minerals that she needs, plus we will use malic acid to remove that aluminum. Malic acid is naturally found in apples, but we use a concentrated dose.”

He had a whole protocol planned out for Lady, to which I agreed.

Dr. Brenda kept coming to treat Lady. The wound was healing slowly, but she was concerned about Lady’s general health and immune system. Since the vet didn’t have a better plan, I decided to listen to the nutritionist.
As soon as the package arrived, I started Lady on everything he had recommended. There were massive tubes of B vitamins, and strange things like ground-up thymus gland. I also administered the malic acid along with her vitamin and mineral supplement.

It took several months, but I started noticing changes in Lady. Her wound completely healed, she started to gain weight, and her coat was looking beautiful. I could tell that she felt better. She had always been prone to thrush, and even that had completely disappeared.

Dr. Brenda came out for a six-month checkup and did not even recognize Lady.

“What did you do to her? Oh my goodness, look at this horse! I never dreamed that she’d even live, let alone look like this!”

The above passage from my book was really the beginning of my alternative health journey. After that experience, my mind was more open to new ideas. Whenever the medical systems’ answers didn’t make sense to me, or didn’t have an answer for me, I sought out alternative ideas.

DIET
My animal’s diet is dramatically different from what I used to feed them. Dr. Abby from the book tried to educate me long ago on a healthy diet for my dogs, but for some reason I was not willing to change from the kibble I was feeding them. I can only wonder if they might have had a healthier life.

Molly Brown has a very colorful diet at the moment. I am using Answers Detailed food. This is a raw food, but Molly doesn’t like it raw so I cook it for her. I am now only partially cooking it and she likes it. This defeats the purpose of the raw diet but I was unable to find another food that was organic and grass fed that I liked better. She was originally constipated on this food. It didn’t see to have enough fiber in it for her, so I add vegetables and fruits to her food with bone broth and probiotics. She loves her food now and I am delighted to see her eating all of those colorful antioxidants. She is an older dog and I am quite aware of her cancer risk. Cancer is the leading cause of death in domestic dogs in the US and 50% of dogs over 10 develop cancer. I learned so much from The Truth About Pet Cancer. Our pets are being poisoned just like us.

Below is a picture of Molly’s food this morning. Notice her licking her chops in the upper left. Today was Answers Detailed Beef, Butternut squash, Arugula, Low sodium bone broth, hemp oil, organic wild blueberries (just because they say wild doesn’t mean they are not sprayed) I purchase frozen organic wild blueberries from Trader Joes. I added ½ Megasporbiotic to her food today. I also use a probiotic from Advanced Biological Concepts. https://www.abcplus.biz/Home This is one of the few animal feed and supplement companies I have found that has organic products.

I tried to feed my horses healthier food years ago only to find out that the beet pulp I was soaking was genetically modified. I was only focused on eliminating the sugar from their diet and I didn’t realize how much I was harming them. You should all read the ingredients in your bag of horse feed. Chances are it has beet pulp and corn, which are both genetically modified and most likely sprayed with glyphosate. The cancer risks of glyphosate are finally being reported and hopefully soon you will hear about the damage it does to the gut.

I now give Velvet a small amount of organic alfalfa pellets to carry her supplements https://www.abcplus.biz/Equine_Feeds_Organic_Alfalfa_Pellets
I used their organic grain but Velvet didn’t like it well enough to eat all her vitamins. I add ABC’s Fortified Organic https://www.abcplus.biz/Organic_Equine_Digestion_ABC_Fortified and put on some malic acid, organic hemp oil or coconut oil, organic selenium and an organic probiotic. https://www.abcplus.biz/Equine_Digestion_Pro-Bi

I do not have access to organic hay since I no longer grow my own, but this is definitely on my wish list.

INSECT CONTROL

I certainly understand the urge to wipe out fleas, ticks, mosquitos and flies. Years ago when I didn’t use Frontline was when Molly came down with Lyme disease. I now take insect control very seriously, but I am using other methods.
The best defense is a good offense and I am starting by improving the immune systems of my animals. I work on them with my SCIO every week for now because both Molly and Velvet were quite ill. The change in their diets and improvement of their gut health was my major focus.

My flea and tick control for Molly has been pretty effective this year. I purchased a frequency tag https://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/only-natural-pet-easy-defense-flea-tick-tag-for-dogs-cats and attached it to her collar. I then sprayed her down with a homemade essential oil spray at least every three days. I kept meaning to spray my yard with Cedarwood oil but I didn’t get around to that. I think controlling fleas and ticks would be much harder if Molly were running the hills of the farm like she used to.
I have found the Dogs Naturally site to be very helpful and in this article there are many more ideas for flea control. https://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/best-home-remedies-fleas/

I only purchased one bottle of commercial fly spray this year for Velvet (my horse) and next year I hope to not purchase any. I bought this to spray her when we went on rides into the deep woods loaded with ticks. The flies and bugs in general are pretty bad here by the water and I have kept things under control with essential oil sprays. There are many recipes on line and I had the most success using Neem, Peppermint, and Cedarwood oil combined. Again it is very important you are using organic, pure oils so you are not doing more harm than good.

PAIN AND INFLAMATION

Phytoprofen Vet
This is an herbal supplement that is a very healthy and effective anti-inflammatory. I used this product on Roxy years ago to get her off of Rimadyl, which is a NSAID. As I look at the ingredients now some of the herbs also have cancer-fighting properties.

CBD Oil
I always have CBD oil in my medicine cabinet for both my dog and horse. If they seem uncomfortable in any way this is a first line medication along with homeopathics from my emergency kit and a SCIO session.

HAIR TESTING
I have found hair mineral analysis very helpful in making a plan to improve my animal’s health. There are now many companies providing this service. Years ago I used Uckele’s testing and their nutritionist was very helpful in designing a healing plan for my horses. Whatever company you choose, having an interpretation by a knowledgeable professional is extremely important. Both of the horses I tested had toxic aluminum levels and when it was bound up with malic acid their disease states disappeared. No one was more surprised than me.
